About the Concert
The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra celebrates the range and vitality of American music. Bernstein's sparkling overture launches the program with irresistible theatrical energy. Soprano Sarah Joyce Cooper then brings her expressive voice to Griffes's atmospheric Three Poems of Fiona MacLeod and Barber's tender Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Conductor Eric Mahl closes the concert with Margaret Bonds's Montgomery Variations, a work of profound imagination and strength. Together, these four composers reveal an American sound that is playful, intimate, searching, and resolute.

About the Conductor
Eric Mahl is Music Director of the Ridgefield Symphony, Opera Acadia, Northport Symphony Orchestra, and Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra, and a conductor at the Charles Ives Music Festival. He has collaborated with musicians from leading American orchestras and artists including Jennifer Koh, Michelle Cann, Brandon Patrick George, Rannan Meyer, and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. An advocate for underrepresented and new music, Mahl has arranged music by Nathaniel Dett and Harry Burleigh and commissioned or premiered more than twenty-five works.
About the Soloist
Sarah Joyce Cooper is an award-winning soprano praised by Opera News for her "meltingly beautiful" singing. Recent highlights include her Seattle Opera debut in the world premiere of Tazewell Thompson's Jubilee and Carnegie Hall performances of Mozart, Poulenc, Margaret Bonds, and new American works. Her roles include Violetta, Juliette, Mimì, Micaëla, and the Countess. Cooper is Artistic Director of Opera Acadia.
