The Brooklyn Symphony Youth Orchestra is the new kid on the block! The new orchestra will begin rehearsals for its very first season in September 2008. We're inviting interested young string players to audition in September.

The BSYO is open to string players who are currently studying and have reached at least a level of NYSSMA grade 3 or 4. An audition of about 10 minutes is required, including scales, one piece, and sight reading. Demonstration of vibrato and proficiency in shifting is strongly encouraged. Auditions will be held on Saturday, September 6. Please read the audition repertoire suggestions and send in the application form as soon as possible to schedule an audition. For more information e-mail kelly@bsoyouth.org or call (718) 499-0257.

First rehearsal
September 18

The youth orchestra will rehearse on Thursdays (5:30 – 7:30 pm, in Park Slope) under the baton of Kelly Howard, noted violinist and violin teacher. Kelly, who leads a Suzuki studio of over 40 students, is also concertmaster of the "grownup" BSO. Nick Armstrong, conductor and artistic director of the BSO, will oversee the youth orchestra. A team of outstanding professional musicians will provide frequent coaching sessions at sectional rehearsals. Administration for the BSYO will be provided by Rachel Coates, an educational consultant and parent of two talented young musicians.

The youth orchestra will perform occasionally with the BSO as part of the regular BSO season at St. Ann's Church, Brooklyn Heights. The BSYO will also present its own concerts and will perform at community venues throughout the borough.

The BSYO is a new program of the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, one of New York's oldest and most vital community orchestras. The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra has been attracting advanced teen players to its ranks for some time. By starting a youth division, we hope to introduce more young musicians to the pleasure of performing the orchestral repertoire and the joy of rehearsing with other dedicated young players. We are making plans to add woodwinds, brass, and percussion in a year or two to become a full symphony orchestra…so stay tuned!

Tuition is $500 a year ($250 payable by September 1, 2008; $250 by January 10, 2009.) Full and partial scholarships are available in case of financial need.
