The BSO performs at St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn Heights

The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra is proud to announce its 2007-2008 season under the baton of Artistic Director Nicholas Armstrong. The orchestra will join together to perform free concerts of classical, romantic, and 20th-century works at St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn Heights, in addition to concerts of smaller ensembles throughout the borough. Founded in 1973, the orchestra a mix of talented amateur, semi-professional, and professional musicians is made up of people from all walks of life who play for the sheer joy of the experience.

Nicholas Armstrong
Artistic Director


During Mr. Armstrong's tenure, the Orchestra has grown into one of the most respected community groups in the metropolitan area. Armstrong is active as an opera and symphony conductor, violinist, and vocal coach. He has conducted throughout the United States and Europe, and in his native England, where he began his musical studies and was graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in composition and viola. Armstrong subsequently studied conducting at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice, where he was also a member of the Teatro La Fenice orchestra. He has worked with Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta, Norman Del Mar, Nino Rota, and Otto Werner Mueller. Armstrong earned a Master's degree in conducting from the Virginia Commonwealth University. While studying in Richmond, he conducted a performance of the Verdi Requiem for the re-opening of the Loew's Theater for live performing arts. Armstrong was Music Director of the New Music Orchestra of Washington and the Montgomery County Youth Chamber Orchestra. As an opera conductor, he has led performances of the Prince George's (MD), Richmond, Capitol (DC), and Victorian Lyric Opera Companies.

Kelly Howard
Concert Mistress

Concert Mistress Kelly Howard grew up in Endicott New York. She has studied with Charles Joseph, Joseph Gingold and Gerald Beal. She holds degrees in Violin Performance and Music Education and training in Suzuki Pedagogy. Since moving to Brooklyn in 1989 Kelly has performed throughout the NY area. She has played a wide variety of chamber music, orchestral and solo repertoire. She has appeared in the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, West Chester Symphony and Nepenthe String Quartet to name a few. She has also taught at Concordia College, Brooklyn College, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Long Island University and given master classes in New York, Paris, Marseille and Aix en Provence. Kelly currently runs her own Suzuki studio in Windsor Terrace where she lives with her husband and son.

President

The Brooklyn Heights Music Society was founded in 1973 with a mission to foster the enjoyment of the musical arts within the Brooklyn community. As the sponsoring organization for the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra and various chamber ensembles, the Society oversees over ten free concerts in various Brooklyn locations each year, including a chamber music series at the Cadman Plaza branch of the Brooklyn Public Library in Brooklyn Heights.
